One Day When

About me
I'm an Australian living in Kyoto, Japan with my husband, John Stachurski, and our beautiful baby, Nina. We moved here from Melbourne, Australia at the end of March 2006, and plan to stay for a while.
On these pages I keep some thoughts and observations I write down from time to time, albums of photos taken in places where I've lived and travelled, and links to websites, blogs and other stuff that I like to browse or read. Most of this won't be of interest to strangers, but is there for family and friends.
This site is my way of learning html, the basics of web design and getting more involved with the open source community, so it's pretty simple. Over time, it might become a bit more sophisticated ...
Since Nina was born at the end of January 2007, I have been on the steep but exhilirating learning curve that comes with caring for a baby, when you don't know very much about them. Giving birth to Nina in Japan was a really positive experience, and although I miss the support of family and friends in Australia, I'm really enjoying raising her here ... so much so, that we have decided to have our second child in Kyoto also! 'Zed II', as this bub is known in utero, is due in mid-December 2008.
My professional background is in project coordination and administration. I have a Masters Degree in International Development and a Graduate Diploma in International Relations, which I took after graduating from an Arts Degree with a major in Politics at Monash University. During our first two years in Kyoto, I edited a book with two colleagues from the Global Reconciliation Network (GRN). Titled 'Pathways to Reconciliation: Between Theory and Practice', and published by Ashgate Publishing in November 2008, the book is a collection of papers given at conferences the GRN has held or sponsored. I coordinated two of these conferences, one in London and one in Sarajevo. I worked on the Sarajevo conference while I was the Research Coordinator at the Globalism Institute, RMIT University.
From August 2008, I began working an as Editorial Associate at the Kyoto Institute for Economic Research, Kyoto University, where I am primarily involved in the english language version of the KIER website and preparation of the International Journal of Economic Theory, published through Wiley-Blackwell.If you want to get me to do something for you, or make up for something terrible you've done to me, here are some sure fire ways to my heart:
- Books by Tariq Ali, Margaret Atwood, Don DeLillo, Philip K.Dick, Haruki Murakami and Salman Rushdie.
- Music by Eric Bachmann, Paul Kelly, The Frames, Martha Wainwright, Surfjan Stevens, Beth Orton and Devendra Banhart.
- Cakes with strawberry, cream, chocolate and lemon curd... or any combination of these ingredients... including all of them together.
- Most Films by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Roland Joffe, Mike Leigh and Ridley Scott.
- Spanakopita from Melissa Cakes in Smith Street, Collingwood.
- Woodblock prints by Shiko Munakata.
- Invitations to go hiking, lie on a beach, see a play, learn to sail better or, share a long lunch and a good bottle of red on a sunny afternoon...
